My mystery project
I mentioned in this post that I was working on a “secret” project. Well I am ready to reveal what I’ve been working on.
A friend of mine found the cutest owl blanket on Etsy. She wanted it for her new baby so I told her that would be my gift. Well a few months passed and as she got closer to her due date I decided it was time to get her gift. I went to Etsy but the shipping was crazy expensive so I had an idea. Find the fabric and just make her the blanket. I mean how hard could it be? I should note I’ve never sewed with Minky fabric and I’d heard it was kind of a pain.
I ordered my fabric and I was super excited when it arrived. It was sooo soft. Perfect for a baby! I washed it and figured out what size I wanted to make. After I got everything cut I realized I had enough to make a small “test” blanket. I’d read up on minky fabric and everyone said to PIN PIN PIN! Don’t you know I pinned the hell out of my fabric, about every inch to inch and a half. For the most part, my test blanket went okay. My seems weren’t perfectly straight but it would do. I knew the tricky part would be the top stitch. I’ve never done a top stitch before. I even decided to tape my fabric to give me a straighter line. Needless to say this line wasn’t as straight as I would have liked but it wasn’t terrible. (note the top 2 pics don’t have the top stitch in the pic)
Front Back Now that I had my test blanket finished I felt pretty good beginning on the bigger blanket. I even decided to tape my lines since the fabric just wasn’t straight. For the most part it was okay except for one side. It came out kind of wonky – I have NO idea what I did. Anyway I decided to just rip out the weird spot and and fix it. That made me much happier, so I set out to start my top stitch. Again I pinned and taped my fabric, but when I started I was so worried about it not being straight I jacked it up a lot. I ended up spending a good amount of time ripping out the top stitch. Thank goodness it was my open side so I was able to get the the inside. Finally I said screw it and just fixed what I could. To me it didn’t come out quite as good as my test but my friend still loved it.
Finished final blanket Looks like I will have to get some more practice with minky!

Currently
I am lusting over wedge boots. Fall is quickly approaching and with the ever popular skinny jeans fad (which I broke down and bought) I feel like I need a pair of tall brown boots. I have a black pair and I have a pair of cowboy boots from Lucky Brand but I don’t have any semi dressy brown shoes/boots.
I know Matt isn’t going to be happy with my newest obsession but really, I mean a girl needs shoes. And he should know this. You should see his shoe collection, it puts mine to shame.
The only problem is I don’t want to spend a lot of money on more boots. I think $50-$60.00 would be fine. I’ve found a few cute options but I have to decide what I think I would like more.
This cutey is from Target and only $39.99. I LOVE the look of this boot but I’m scared the heel would make it a little unpractical for every day wear.
The next pair I found is a cute little number from DSW. They are $49.94 and I think they would be everything I wanted. Sorry I can’t get the pic to copy from the site.
Hopefully I will find something soon.

Another birthday cake fail!
Grrrr! Saturday was Matt’s birthday. We’ve been together for 4 of his birthdays so far and I would say 3 have ended in cake fail. I have no idea what it is. I *can* bake. I can bake well actually but his birthday cakes always turn into some sort of disaster.
The first year I was in the process of moving so I had to buy new cake forms. This is commonly referred to as the Grand Canyon cake. (The link will show all the cakes.) The next year I decided to play with fondant. It turned out eh, okay. The red velvet wasn’t dense enough to hold the wait of the fondant. The next year the cake was okay. Well this year I told him I would make red velvet cupcakes. We would take them to our tail gate. Our tail gate was kind of lame and the cupcakes, which started out in the shade, ended up in the sun before I knew it. Next thing I know the icing has completely melted everywhere! Ughh! Thankfully I had put a few back for later so when we go home we had decent cupcakes. (Oh and by the way I didn’t even bother taking pics.)
It’s just annoying that I keep failing his birthday cakes.
Anyway I hope he had a great birthday! Love ya Matte!

The package has arrived!
And by package I mean my parents. They pulled in to Raleigh around 2:30. Their first stop was the storage unit to unload some stuff off the trunk. Then I guess they will try to get into their apartment. Since they are so close to my office I am going to run by after work and see them for a few minutes. Then I am off to Target to pick up a few essentials. Matt is going to Fresh Market for steaks. We are just going to grill out for his birthday. Honestly this makes my day a lot easier. Now I won’t have to rush home to get ready for dinner. Plus I have to make his cupcakes for the tailgate tomorrow. Needless to say it will be a busy night.
I am so ready to leave right now. It is beautiful outside, and well, I have stuff to do! Hurry up 5:00.

On the road again
So my parents are currently making the drive from Oklahoma to North Carolina. They plan to arrive Friday afternoon. They can’t move into their apt until Saturday so they will stay in a hotel Friday night. We would have offered our house but between our 2 cats, their 2 cats and dog, we figured that might be a bit much. Plus they can get a hotel close to the apt. It looks like Matt and I will have to load up our spare mattress to take to them on Saturday since they were unable to get theirs on the truck. Apparently there were a few other items that didn’t make it on the truck like the vacuum cleaner. Oopsy.
Hopefully they will make good time and have a safe trip.

Mystery project
The materials for my next projected arrived on Friday. Saturday we had the NC State game and yesterday was gross and rainy out so I began working on my latest venture. I got it started and today I worked on it some more. I still have a ways to go before I’m done but I hope to be finished by the end of the week. *crosses finger*.
I don’t want to post until this is completely finished but after today I am really excited. I think this will be my best project yet! Yay!!!!

Pinterest Project – Watercolor State – Complete!
I know it’s been a few weeks since I mentioned this project. My first attempt wasn’t great, the second was actually really good minus the fact I completely messed up the state of NC. The other night while I was cooking dinner I decided to try again and I think it was probably the worst by far.
The other day, while I wasn’t cooking, I tried again. This time I was much happier with the results. So much so that this is the finished project. I think it looks pretty similar to my inspiration pic. I still feel as though I could do better but I am pretty happy with this one. Now I just have to find a frame and a spot in the house.

Hello my pretty!
The other day I was at Carolina pottery when I stumbled across this adorable vase. It was pink, had flowers, and well, it was cheap! I was surprised when I saw the price tag read $7.99. Score! For that price I knew I couldn’t not get it. As I looked closer I noticed one of the side flowers was a little chipped. I figured that would get me at least 10% off. Watch out with my .79 savings. 🙂
For now I’ve decided the vase will live on our chest of drawers. I don’t know if this is where it will stay since I still haven’t figure out exactly what I want to do on the chest of drawers but it does look purdy! I love the pink against the grey wall. And I think a little pop of pink with the teal quilt will be nice. Maybe I’ll have to look for a decorative pillow for the bed now. Shhh don’t tell Matt. 😉

Yard work
For the past 2 years, or however long I’ve lived with Matt, I have HATED our bushes out front. Now I’m not really a gardener but in the past few months I’ve done pretty well keeping my plants alive, minus the rose bush. I don’t wanna talk about it. 😉 I had already decided as soon as fall came I was ripping those ugly damn bushes out and putting something else in.
Before Well yesterday was that day. Matt and I ran to Lowes and bought a small shovel and some mulch. While we were there we looked at plants and I think I’m going to put a few small azaleas in the space but I wanted to wait until the bushes were gone before buying something else. We got home and while Matt was watching football, I grabbed Julio and we went outside to pull out the bushes. This actually turned out to be a lot more difficult then I thought it would be. Thankfully the ground was wet so that made it a little easier but there were still spots I just couldn’t get the shovel in. Matt finally looked outside and came downstairs. He ended up having to help me get all 3 bushes out. Suckers were super heavy. I didn’t really expect that. 🙂
Once we got the bushes out the flower bed was a mess. Not to mention there was a ton of trash in the ground. I found a bottle opener key chain, a long yellow plastic thing, and some netting. Thankfully I didn’t find a snake or any other creepy crawleys. I tried to get the dirt spread around but it was really a disaster. Matt suggested we buy some edging while we were at Lowes so he helped me put that in and that helped to define the space. Once we had the edging in we put down the mulch. Oh man, you can’t imagine the difference. The space looks SOOOO much better. Even with no plants it just feels clean and crisp. I am really looking forward to putting in more bushes and hopefully keeping the space a little more organized. 🙂
